How Do Gender Stereotypes Affect The Decisions Our Youth

Christine Lin Hill TPSP, P5 26 October 2014 Rough Draft One: How do gender stereotypes affect the decisions our youth makes and ultimately their careers? Being the same age, having the same economic security, living in the same neighborhood, boys and girls obtain different career paths and positions. Gender stereotypes prevent an equal distribution of men and women in fields of work do to the strong influences by the education system, the media, and family. To start off, gender stereotypes are â€Å"one-sided and exaggerated images of men and women which are deployed repeatedly in everyday life† (Marshall). Certain behaviors are categorized as feminine or masculine. However, gender is not categorical; it is relational. Gender stereotypes serve as a comparative quality where if one is less feminine, one is more masculine. Thus, these relations that carry negative connotations force individuals to certain behaviors or practices due to their biological gender. Gender roles are personas that one may take on to fit one’s biological gender. Each person wishes to be in a state of order in society and gladly would fall in line to be more feminine or masculine. As a majority of these two ideas develop from an early age, a major influence to each individual occurs in one’s school. The average student in the United States of America will spend â€Å"1,620 hours a year receiving their education† (Chalabi).
